Vijaya dasami (also known as Dussehra in some parts of North India) is a festival celebrating the killing of the evil King Ravana, the union of Lord Rama with His wife Sita, and the ultimate victory of good over evil.
On October 12, 2024, Towaco Temple hosted a grand celebration for this event, offering a variety of activities for all ages. Outdoor games like arm wrestling and musical chairs brought out the competitive spirit in attendees, while the challenge of creating shapes from rope blindfolded added an element of hilarity and bonding. Inside, Bingo numbers echoed through the halls, punctuated by cheers of victory. Later the sacred Arti ceremony ushered in a moment of reverence, followed by a captivating Ramlila performance that held the audience spellbound.
What followed was entirely unexpected. The temple, initially prepared to welcome 150 guests, found itself at the epicenter of an unexpected surge of 500+ devotees and curious newcomers alike. The kitchen staff sprang into action, to cook for the additional guests along with others assisting with parking, guiding new comers, and handling various other tasks. This spontaneous act of service embodied the true spirit of community and generosity that defines our temple.
At 8:15 PM, the burning of the Ravana effigy started. This symbolic triumph of good over evil resonated deeply with all present, creating a moment of shared cultural significance. As we reflect on this year's Vijaya dasami festival, we are filled with gratitude and inspiration.
This festival at Towaco Temple was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of community, the enduring appeal of our cultural traditions, and the boundless potential that lies in coming together in celebration and faith. We are grateful to have had a chance to serve the community in this way and look forward to finding ways to enhance the experience for future attendees. As we move forward, we carry with us the warmth of shared memories and the excitement of future gatherings, knowing that each year brings new opportunities to strengthen our bonds and welcome more people into our ever-growing temple family.
